Businessman Arrested at the Maputo International Airport for allege charges of Tax Evasion

A foreign businessman was apprehended at Maputo International Airport while attempting to flee the country. The suspect, Michael Alexopaulos, had been on the States’ radar since his work period here. His arrest occurred on Wenesday, July 8, 2024, and he now faces charges related to Tax Evasion totaling over R700,000.00 (Seven hundred thousand rands)

Michael Alexopaulos is the sole director of of his company, a company that received substantial amounts of funds from a business source between his contract period. However, the company allegedly failed to honestly declare its income to the Autoridade Tributária de Moçambique.

The suspect is now out on bond, but law enforcement has confiscated his passport pending the outcome of his trial. He is scheduled to appear in Maputo Magistrate’s Court on May 13, 2024. Michael Alexopaulos will be charged with tax evasion and illegally trying to leave the country.

The spokesperson of the State, who has dealt with Alexopaulos’s cases before, reiterated that this is the second time Alexopaulos has attempted to leave the country under such circumstances.

If found guilty, Michael Alexopaulos could face severe penalties, including fines or worse case scenerio imprisonment.

Tax Evasion remains a serious offense, and authorities are vigilant in apprehending individuals attempting to evade justice. The case against Michael Alexopaulos serves as a reminder that financial crimes have consequences, even when suspects try to flee the country.
